Smith and White

Page history last edited by aml156@... 15 years, 7 months ago

Joseph Smith lived from 1805 to 1844 and was the first prophet, seer, and revelator of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which is known more commonly as the Mormon Church. He wrote various writings about extraterrestrial life none of which are within the actual Book of Mormon. A few of the most popular are The Doctrines and Convenants and The Pearl of Great Price. The Pearl of Great Price is composed mostly of the books of Moses and Abraham. In 1992 E. Robert Paul a practicing Mormon and astronomer wrote a book of Mormon cosmology that contained the beliefs of Joseph Smith.

The ideas of Mormon cosmology can be divided into two groups; those that have been derived from Copernican and those of Joseph Smith. The Copernican ideas that are of Mormon belief are that other planets of our solar system are inhabited by rational beings, the fixed stars are suns surrounded by solar systems, these planets are inhabited by conscious beings, and the idea of an infinite universe and solar systems. In addition the ideas that Smith incorporated into the Mormon religion are worlds have passed away and others have and are being formed, worlds are governed in a hierarchical relationship, every system has its own laws and bounds, Christ made and makes all worlds, different kinds of people inhabit different worlds, the earth has been the most wicked of all worlds, resurrected beings also reside on worlds, worlds exist in space and time, and Christ’s redemption is universal.

Ellen G. White together with her husband James White were central figures of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. This domination was founded during the mid-nineteenth century American after it branched from the Millerite movement. This movement was characterized by its incorrect prediction that he worlds would end in 1843.

Ellen G. White experienced hundreds of visions in which many would bring her to travel to various planets and speak with extraterrestrials. In one vision in particular the inhabitants of another planet tell her “if you are faithful, you with the 144,000 shall have the privilege of visiting all the worlds.”

One of her writings The Story of Patriarchs and Prophets describes the “Great Controversy” between Christ and Satan. The story of the controversy is that the fallen angels tried to spread evil throughout the universe, but only one world succeeded, Earth, due to Adam’s sin. Therefore it created a need for Christ’s redemptive actions.
